Family Camp Day 1
Monday
.
In the first 2 hours of family camp, I changed three dirty diapers on Kaelem requiring at least two dozen wipes total. There was no point in fretting over the fact that we’re sharing a bathroom with seven teenage boys this week when my own son is capable of a more potent smell than all of them combined. So not the most pleasant start for the week, but all in all a quite good day.
.
Jed drove the church shuttle up to camp with me, Kaelem, and 11 of the 15 high school counselors who are keeping the little kids while the parents at camp have some time off. Kaelem loved the bus and said, “yay family camp!” as we took off. He normally points out all the big cars on the road when we’re driving the station wagon; today the cars suddenly became little cars.
.
The counselors helped unload the trailer of stuff we hauled with us and then helped all the families unload their cars as they arrived to camp. Jed and I have been blown away by their willingness to jump right in get the work done. Even just spending a week of their summer with the purpose of serving others is something I never would have signed up for as a high schooler and some of these kids have been coming for years.
.
It’s been four years since I’ve been to this particular camp, but I remember being overwhelmingly hot that time. So, of course being pregnant I packed only shorts and tank tops for the week after seeing a warm forecast. Haha. It was in the 60’s! I was looking forward to floating down a river in an inner tube this week- so much for that idea. Thankfully, Steph graciously brought up some long sleeves for us to borrow. Thank you!
.
My favorite memory of the day: Hmmm, I think just watching Kaelem be really excited about being here, exploring the camp with him, and having him be right at home in new surroundings. I’m praying he sleeps well tonight for a big day tomorrow. Or, when he said, “itsy spider” when an ant crawled on his foot.
