Advice?- *updated*

Did Kaelem read my post last night or what? I just bragged about him not having messy pants and then today, plop, there it goes right in the pull-up. I had given him two chances before my shower and then when it was too late I heard him yelling again very earnestly, “potty potty.” That was with me. While I was cleaning up after breakfast I heard Jed exclaim from the bathroom with Kaelem, “No, you didn’t just do that! It goes in the potty, not beside it!” Apparently, Kaelem kept his pants dry, but wet the floor. Since breakfast though he’s actually earned two stickers. I don’t know what to make of that, except to say, hooray!

Hopefully we will soon have another topic to talk about.

It’s now been a week and a half of full out potty training. He’s wearing training pants during the day and only diapers at night (or if we’re not home). He’s been doing great with #2 and tells us when he needs to go. He even went on the big potty at church. We’re still getting many false alarms though and many wet pants. I take him to the bathroom after meals and naps as well as every 1-2 hours. I know he can stay dry for 2-3 hours at a time and have rewarded him for that. I thought the thinner pants would increase his discomfort, encouraging him to use the potty instead, however, he doesn’t seem to be phased by the wetness. Of course if there have to be messy britches I prefer the wet kind, but I’m out of ideas on how to keep him progressing! Advice?

    Sarah,

Here’s one idea to try…with the last little guy potty training in the fall, we spent at least a few days setting a timer for every 10 minutes, putting him on the potty to at least try to go. If nothing happened, it was no big deal and we re-set the timer and moved on. You would be surprised though how quickly he started getting the hang of it and how often he started going. Eventually we didn’t need the timer and he knew when he was about to go and could tell us. Of course accidents always happen, but for the most part, that worked wonders. It’s rough for you however, because it requires being home for long stretches of time, but it might be worth a try? It does seem to prevent lots of wet diapers or pants :)

my advice is to teach him how to change his diaper. Then he’ll potty train himself when he gets tired of it. :) j/k

I’ve only potty trained 2 kids, but in my experience you really have to wait until they are ready to do it, otherwise you are just training yourself to know when they go to the bathroom. If you do wait until Kaelem is ready – meaning he can go on his own – then the process will be very quick, otherwise it it months on training. My advice would be to hold off and go back to diapers or pull ups – Kaelem knows enough about it now that if he wants to go on the toilet he will – the way I see it is that you are either changing wet and dirty diapers, or washing wet and dirty clothes. I would hold off for 6 months or until he shows an interest – besides you are going to have your hands full with a newborn and it will be hard to stay on top of the potty training with Kaelem. Hope that helps – good luck!
