Getting Older
I feel like I should go ahead and start coffin shopping now that I’ve creeped into another age demo. Can you believe it, I found a gray hair the other day…on MY head!
Call it a quarter-life crisis if you want, but getting older has started me thinking about how I spend my time. These thoughts were further stimulated by watching a drama performed at church recently, “The Bema Seat.” The main message, based on 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, was that one day Christians will stand before Christ as He evaluates the work done in this life.
I started replaying the long list of everyday events in my life: sleeping, eating, washing dishes, doing laundry, changing diapers, grocery shopping, playing peek-a-boo, etc. Then there’s the seemingly more spiritual actions of going to church, reading the Bible, giving money to the church, praying, leading a Bible study, etc. Finally there’s the fun list of watching movies and tv, playing Settlers of Catan, Facebooking, shopping, sleeping in, and so on. So, how am I supposed to know what is “straw” and what is “gold”? Probably 90 percent of my life is spent doing things that are, well, just ordinary. What to do? Should I throw out my tv? Should I not bother cleaning the house? Should I instead move to the jungles of Africa to be a missionary to cannibals?!!?
Well, I still don’t have the perfect answer. But, I have been comforted enough with 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God,” that hopefully I will not be growing any more gray hairs any time soon.
I’ve also decided to keep the tv, but from now on will not watch any movies that are rated less than a “B” by the critics on the Yahoo movies review site.
On another train of thought, Kaelem is also getting older and has already reached his 9 month mark. He’s changing from a baby to a tot right before our eyes. He’s getting more mobile, but is not full out crawling or walking yet. His biggest achievement in mobility is scooting backwards on the living room floor, although, he didn’t seem to like that too much (see video). He does love standing up though and has taken a few steps while holding on to us or furniture.
I’m working on putting some playtime pictures up- check the album page soon.
