Obscured by the Ordinary
I am a studious student of lyrics. Lyrics are chains of words that songwriters put together to evoke specific feelings or thoughts from those who hear them. The tough part for the songwriters, as opposed to the poet, is that lyrics must conform to time and rhythm standards as well. So a great lyric may need to be scrapped or revised to fit.
The reason for this post is that today I’ve already heard two amazing lyrics. One was wrapped inside a song that could best be described as ‘mediocre’. The lyric is ‘life’s like an hourglass glued to the table’, meaning that though at times we’d like to reverse time, it is impossible. The song itself, however, is nothing too special.
The other lyric was in Sting’s ‘Fields of Gold’. This one’s a pretty good song. The lyric is a little PG13, so beware before reading on.
Still here? Okay. The lyric is ‘feel her body rise as you kiss her mouth among the fields of gold.’ Now kids, listen to me: do not attempt this lyric at home until you’re married.
What lyrics (short lines, not whole songs, now) are your favorite?
